Where it all began…
My story began in Corpus Christi, TX. I grew up with the typical Texas influences- football, rodeo, and later, the Texas oil fields. My interest in woodworking started after I came home from college. My dad came home with a wood lathe and asked if I was interested in it. I said, “sure”. The first time I went to try and use it, I knew nothing about it. There was no YouTube back then. I literally put a football helmet on and went at it.
The most available wood was the local supply of Mesquite wood. After fooling with it enough, I discovered just how amazing a finished piece of Mesquite can be. I moved to Western Kentucky in 1992 with a family and settled into life here. I started using the local hardwoods available. Locally, there are some gorgeous species of wood, but I still kept going back to Mesquite. I am fortunate to have a college roommate in South Texas that has a large ranch where I can go get Mesquite as I need it.
I became interested in epoxy when it first came out and began trying to master that skill. The first thing I learned was to not let it leak and how to stop it when it does. My floor looks like a rainbow. I started with smaller projects such as cutting boards and serving trays, and then did some coffee tables and dining room tables with benches. My own personal project I started about six years ago is what I now call the Tex-E-Can. It is an insulated holder for cans and/or bottles made of Mesquite wood and epoxy. No two are alike. They can be personalized. Your last sip will be as cold as your first.
My wife and I are extremely fortunate. The December ‘21 tornado that hit Mayfield came right through our backyard. I was in the shop working and never heard it coming. Our house survived, but my shop was destroyed. I dug out without a scratch. It has taken 1-1/2 years to rebuild. We are still working on getting things back to normal and it gets better every day.
I never do two of the exact same things. I do custom request projects. as well as sell things that are in stock. We have branched out a little and now do custom rock and stone engraving. We create pet memorials, addresses, wood signs, wedding plaques, and just about anything that can be engraved. I am retired and my wife works part-time, so I am available almost every day. Feel free to contact us with any questions you might have.
We always enjoy a good conversation.
